"As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend."
And that's it. Tonight I decided I wanted to write about a single Bible verse that was so simple, yet so powerful and so meaningful to me. This verse really means a lot to me, and helps me to think about what it truly means to be a friend- especially a friend of someone who is mutual in Christ (or not).
I first wrote this verse on a picture friend I gave my friend (actually, it was Mercedes, the other author of this blog! :) because she meant so much to me. To tell you the truth, all I did was look up "friendship Bible verses" and this was one of the first that popped up. I thought it was perfect because that's what Mercedes is to me, she sharpens me- she keeps me accountable. She makes me a better person. As iron makes other iron more sharp, therefore better; so a friend brings out the best in another friend. So a friend lifts another friend up constantly. So a friend constantly is reflecting Jesus and reminding them of Him to friends.
Today one of my very good friends had a birthday party. It really made me think about not only how much I value his friendship, but the friendships of everyone that was there at the party. I had so much fun, and I really believe these are friends I will have forever.
With Mercedes, I thought a lot about how she sharpened me. But tonight I am wondering, how am I sharpening my friends? How am I bringing out the best in them? How am I always being there for them, for whatever they need, serving them, and giving them my love? You'd be surprised. Not always in the most obvious or most nicest of ways, but luckily my friends know my personality... haha :-)
But I can not do any of these things (nor do I have the right to do any of these things) if I am not doing it with Christ-centered intentions, or to promote Him and His love for them. That's why and how we sharpen each other, is because Christ's love working through us. We are His. That's how we sharpen each other.
God, I am so beyond thankful to You for my wonderful friends; every single one of them. Even any readers possibly reading this, I am so blessed for their consideration to read this post and I am blessed by their friendship. I know every friendship will have it's up and downs, and none will ever be perfect. I accept that now. I pray for these friendships to last, and to last because of You; and only You. I pray that I can sharpen my friends, and that they can sharpen me. I thank You for this simple yet beautiful verse. I love You so much and pray that You would bring all of my friends into Your arms and remind them of what You've done for them. I love You and thank You again for them. In Jesus name AMEN
